Europe wants to make sure no one has a kill switch over its technology

Triggered by an incident where Microsoft shut down an international court official's email at Washington's request, the European Commission has introduced a sweeping tech sovereignty package to cut dependence on foreign technology. The centerpiece, the Cloud and AI Development Act, restricts US cloud providers from handling sensitive government data. The package also targets semiconductors, with €120 billion in investment planned by 2035, and aims to triple EU data center capacity.
