US considers ending ban on supersonic flights

The FAA is proposing to end a 53-year-old ban on supersonic flights over the continental US, shifting the focus from speed restrictions to noise limits. The old ban, which kept the Concorde off transcontinental routes, blocked even quieter supersonic jets from flying over the US. With quieter supersonic aircraft now a realistic possibility, regulating noise rather than speed makes more sense.
