Chinese robot company unveils $650,000 mech you can pilot

For just $650,000, you could be the world's first civilian mech pilot.

Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics, already famous for its backflipping kung-fu robots that went viral during Chinese New Year celebrations, has unveiled its first rideable robot, the GD01.

Marketed as a "civilian vehicle," the GD01 weighs around 500 kilograms with a person inside and features a striking ability to shift from walking upright on two legs to moving on all fours. It's not exactly a Transformer, but it would certainly turn heads on the way to the grocery store.

The company urges buyers to use it in a "friendly and safe manner," though their promotional video does show the machine knocking down a brick wall, set to pounding rock music.

No release date has been announced, but for those who grew up dreaming of piloting a mech, the wait may finally be over.
