Scientists finally solve a century-old quantum mystery

Physicists at the University of Vermont have solved a 90-year quantum physics puzzle by developing an exact solution for the "damped quantum harmonic oscillator." Professor Dennis Clougherty and student Nam Dinh reformulated a 1900 model by Horace Lamb to preserve Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in quantum systems, successfully describing how vibrating atoms lose energy. Their breakthrough could enable ultra-precise quantum measurements below standard quantum limits, potentially leading to new sensor technologies.
