China builds 582-tonne magnet for its 'artificial sun'

China has completed and tested the world's largest superconducting fusion magnet, a major step toward its goal of generating electricity from nuclear fusion by 2030. The 582-tonne, D-shaped magnet — built entirely with domestic materials — is 1.3 times larger and stores three times more energy than similar magnets built for the international ITER project, making it a landmark achievement in clean energy development.
