Using AI to control fusion energy

Google DeepMind and Commonwealth Fusion Systems have partnered to use artificial intelligence to accelerate fusion energy development, bringing clean power closer to reality. The collaboration focuses on controlling plasma at temperatures over 100 million degrees Celsius in CFS's SPARC tokamak, which aims to be the first magnetic fusion machine to generate net energy. Their AI system TORAX simulates plasma behavior and optimizes tokamak operations through reinforcement learning, potentially enabling breakthrough fusion energy within years.
