OpenAI’s new open weight (Apache 2) models are really good

OpenAI has released two impressive open-source models under Apache 2.0 licenses: gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. The larger model performs comparably to OpenAI's proprietary o4-mini on reasoning benchmarks, while the smaller 20b model can run on devices with just 16GB memory yet still delivers strong performance on complex tasks. Both are mixture-of-experts models that perform exceptionally well on knowledge-based challenges, potentially positioning them as the new leaders among open-weight models.
