Researchers tested whether the RYS (Repeat Your Self) technique — duplicating specific middle layers of language models to boost performance — works beyond the original Qwen2-72B model, using extensive analysis on Qwen3.5-27B that included 3,024 beam search candidates and validation across multiple languages. The study confirmed that strategically repeating 5-11 middle layers improves both mathematical reasoning and emotional intelligence scores while revealing that these models process information in three distinct phases: encoding surface language, reasoning in a universal format-agnostic space, and decoding back to specific languages.
