CPUs Aren't Dead. Gemma2B Out Scored GPT-3.5 Turbo on Test That Made It Famous

Google's Gemma 2B language model, running on a standard laptop CPU, scored 8.0 on the MT-Bench evaluation compared to GPT-3.5 Turbo's 7.94, despite being 87 times smaller at 2 billion versus 175 billion parameters. Researchers identified seven failure patterns and developed surgical fixes using about 60 lines of Python each, pushing the score to 8.2 and demonstrating that advanced AI capabilities can run locally on consumer hardware without expensive GPU infrastructure.
