Physicists Simulated a Black Hole in a Lab. Then It Started to 'Evaporate'.

Physicists have long predicted that black holes slowly lose energy through "Hawking radiation," but the mechanism behind this energy transfer has never been observed. A team led by Lorenzo Procopio of Paderborn University recreated this process using laser pulses in optical fiber, and discovered that Hawking radiation results from a single, direct process — far simpler than previously thought — potentially revealing how real black holes actually evaporate.
