Google is finally building its own DeX: First look at Android's Desktop Mode

SMRTR summary

Google's Android team is quietly cooking up a desktop experience that could rival Samsung's popular DeX feature. Hidden within the latest Android beta, this unfinished mode transforms a connected Pixel phone into a makeshift PC.

"It's possible to launch multiple apps in floating windows simultaneously," explains tech reporter Mishaal Rahman, who uncovered the feature. A familiar taskbar appears, offering quick access to pinned and recent apps. Windows can be freely moved, resized, and snapped to edges - mimicking desktop operating systems.

While still in development, this evolution could expand Android's reach beyond mobile screens. Google appears to be adapting its tablet interface for external displays, potentially unifying its desktop strategy around Android.

Don't expect to see this DeX competitor immediately, though. It may not debut until Android 17 next year, as Google refines the experience for a wider rollout.
