Europe prepares trial for Open Web Index to reduce reliance on Google and Bing

A European consortium is developing the Open Web Index, a public digital library to support new search engines and reduce reliance on Google and Bing. Starting trials in June, the project aims to foster nonprofit alternatives to ad-driven search engines. Initially providing about one petabyte of content, it will scale up to 10 petabytes.
