Doctors develop AI stethoscope that can detect major heart conditions in 15 seconds

SMRTR summary

A humble stethoscope, virtually unchanged since 1816, has received a revolutionary upgrade that could transform how we detect life-threatening heart conditions. In just 15 seconds, this AI-powered device can diagnose heart failure, valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms that human ears would miss.

"The design of the stethoscope has been unchanged for 200 years – until now," notes Dr. Patrik Bächtiger of Imperial College London. "It is incredible that a smart stethoscope can be used for a 15-second examination" to detect serious heart conditions.

About the size of a playing card, the device captures both an ECG and heart sounds simultaneously, sending data to cloud-based AI for instant analysis.

In a study involving 12,000 patients across 200 UK medical practices, patients examined with the device were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart failure and nearly three times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation compared to traditional methods.

The technology could help avoid dangerous delays in treatment, particularly for heart failure patients who are often diagnosed only after arriving at emergency rooms seriously ill.
