Deepfake videos are getting shockingly good

ByteDance researchers have introduced OmniHuman-1, an AI system that creates highly realistic deepfake videos from a single image and audio input. The system surpasses previous deepfake techniques in quality and realism. While technologically impressive, it raises concerns about misinformation and fraud. Experts note that deepfakes led to over $12 billion in fraud losses in 2023, with projections of $40 billion by 2027. Some states are enacting laws against AI impersonation, but detecting and regulating deepfakes remains difficult.
