Browser extensions with 8 million users collect extended AI conversations

Eight browser extensions with 8 million combined users are secretly harvesting all AI conversations from platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, collecting every prompt, response, and session detail even when users disable the extensions' main functions. Security firm Koi discovered this data collection starting in July 2024, beginning with Urban VPN Proxy which advertises "AI protection" as a feature. The extensions capture personal conversations including medical questions and financial details, then sell this information to third parties for marketing purposes, with users unable to stop the harvesting unless they completely uninstall the extensions.
