UN forms international organization to protect undersea internet cables

The United Nations' International Telecommunication Union has formed a new agency to protect submarine communication cables, which carry over 99% of international digital data. The International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience will work to enhance cable resilience, promote best practices, and ensure uninterrupted communication. In 2023, over 200 cable repairs were reported globally, highlighting the need for improved protection. This initiative aims to safeguard critical infrastructure supporting commerce, finance, government operations, and essential services worldwide.
