UK firm overcomes key barrier to fusion energy scale-up, validates new nuclear fuel concept

First Light Fusion validated its FLARE fusion reactor concept can achieve a tritium breeding ratio of 1.8, the highest announced to date, addressing fusion energy's critical fuel shortage problem. With only 20 kilograms of tritium available globally and its 12-year half-life creating supply challenges, FLARE's ability to produce excess tritium using natural lithium could fuel the entire fusion industry while generating commercial electricity.
