This Supernova Death of a Star Broke All the Rules

But the star didn't go quietly as expected. Despite being 20 times the mass of our sun, its shock breakout was unusually faint. And the powerful plasma jet astronomers anticipated? It never came. As astronomer Greg Zeimann put it, "One possibility is that the jet was 'choked,' either by the surface of the star or by circumstellar material surrounding the star."
The last confirmed shock breakout sighting was back in 2008. With the Einstein Probe now scanning the sky, these rare cosmic death scenes may finally become something we can witness more regularly.
