'Simulating scientists': A new AI tool wants to make serendipitous scientific discovery less human

Australian researchers have developed LLM4SD, a new AI tool to accelerate scientific discoveries. The open-source tool retrieves information, analyzes data, and generates hypotheses across various scientific fields. LLM4SD outperformed leading models in 58 research tasks, improving accuracy by up to 48% in predicting quantum properties. Unlike other AI tools, LLM4SD explains its reasoning, making predictions more transparent. The researchers view it as "simulating scientists" and believe it can enhance traditional machine learning models by synthesizing knowledge and providing interpretable explanations.
