Scientists confirm one-dimensional electron behavior in phosphorus chains

Researchers at BESSY II have experimentally confirmed that phosphorus atom chains on silver surfaces exhibit one-dimensional electronic behavior. Using advanced spectroscopy techniques, scientists separated signals from chains aligned in different directions to prove each chain functions as a genuine one-dimensional electronic system. When chains are spaced farther apart, the material acts as a semiconductor, but calculations predict it would become metallic when packed tightly together, opening possibilities for advanced electronic materials.
