NASA’s James Webb catches a supermassive black hole feeding

The James Webb Space Telescope has given astronomers their clearest look yet at how supermassive black holes fuel themselves, and the answer turns out to be surprisingly elegant.
Using nearly eight hours of observation time, an international team studied NGC 4696, a massive galaxy about 145 million light-years away. What they found were long, thin strands of cooling gas flowing inward and connecting directly to a rotating disk surrounding the galaxy's central black hole. That disk, stretching nearly 800 light-years across, feeds the black hole directly.
The discovery helps solve a long-standing puzzle: if a black hole's own jets heat surrounding gas, how does it keep eating? The answer appears to be a self-regulating cycle where heated gas eventually cools, condenses into filaments, and falls back inward.
"It's amazing to see that happening in these JWST images," said MSU Physics and Astronomy Professor Mark Voit.
