Innovative electrolytes could transform steelmaking and beyond

Argonne National Laboratory researchers are developing innovative electrolytes for various electrochemical processes, including steel production and electric vehicle batteries. The team is focusing on changing anion chemistry in electrolytes to improve energy efficiency and longevity. Their approach involves creating contact ion pairs, where anions partially or fully replace solvents surrounding cations. The researchers are using experiments, machine learning, and AI to identify optimal anion-cation pairings for specific applications. This work aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in steel manufacturing and improve battery technology.
