In a cosmic first, astronomers detect 2 sibling supernovas that came from a pair of bound stars

Astronomers have discovered the first known case of two supernova remnants that came from a pair of stars once orbiting each other. Using 16 years of NASA Fermi telescope data, researchers confirmed that remnants IC 443 and the lesser-known G189.6+3.3 are linked, with odds of a coincidental pairing between 1-in-100 and 1-in-1,000. This real-world system could help scientists accurately measure supernova energy for the first time.
