Entire world’s water could be purified by new microbes found hiding by US scientists

SMRTR summary

Scientists have discovered a new phylum of microbes called CSP1-3 living up to 70 feet underground in soil samples from the USA and China. These microbes help purify groundwater by feeding on carbon and nitrogen that wash down from topsoil. The microbes make up over 50% of some deep soil communities and are metabolically active, contrary to expectations. This discovery could lead to new ways of filtering pollutants from drinking water and solving pressing environmental problems.
