Double jackpot: Australia finds oldest megaraptor along with new dinosaur fossils

Paleontologists discovered fossils of two apex predator groups in ancient Victoria, Australia: the oldest known megaraptorids and the first carcharodontosaurs found in Australia. Five theropod dinosaur fossils reveal a complex predator ecosystem from 121 to 108 million years ago, with megaraptorids up to 7 meters long dominating, and smaller carcharodontosaurs reaching 2-4 meters. These findings challenge previous assumptions about Gondwanan predator hierarchies and suggest faunal interchange between Australia and South America via Antarctica during the Early Cretaceous.
