Dark matter finally found? Detector spots rare particle event with no source

A dark matter detector buried nearly a mile underground in South Dakota has picked up a single mysterious particle event that scientists cannot fully explain. The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment recorded the signal during 220 days of data collection, and it appeared exactly where dark matter interactions were expected. With only a 2.6 sigma significance, it falls short of the 5-sigma threshold needed to confirm a discovery, but researchers say it is their most compelling hint yet.
