China debuts robot dog capable of mapping and navigating 10 million square feet

SMRTR summary

A robotic dog gracefully descended stairs, lifted its foreleg in what appeared to be a wave, then rolled away on wheels through a Tokyo exhibition hall, captivating onlookers at this year's International Robot Exhibition. Chinese firm Pudu's latest creation, the D5, stands nearly three feet tall and represents a significant leap from the company's smaller 2022 model.

The quadruped robot packs serious computing power with 275 TOPS of processing capability, enabling it to navigate everything from warehouse floors to rugged outdoor terrain without human supervision. Four fisheye cameras provide complete 360-degree vision while dual LiDARs create detailed 3D maps of surroundings up to one million square meters.

Built to withstand harsh conditions from minus 4 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit, the D5 can carry 66 pounds for over two hours. Shenzhen-based Pudu has sold over 100,000 robots across 80 countries since 2016, riding China's wave of service robotics innovation driven by abundant real-world applications and lower manufacturing costs.
