Breakthrough Alzheimer’s study finds enzyme that ties brain inflammation to memory loss

SMRTR summary

Scientists have linked the enzyme SIRT2 to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. The study shows that astrocytes, previously considered support cells, actively contribute to brain dysfunction by overproducing GABA in response to amyloid-beta plaques. Inhibiting SIRT2 in mice partially restored memory and reduced GABA production. This finding could lead to new therapies targeting astrocytic reactivity in Alzheimer's, although SIRT2 itself may not be an ideal drug target due to its limited impact on neurodegeneration.
