Black hole pairs may unveil new particles

Physicists propose that careful analysis of gravitational waves from merging black holes could reveal new ultralight particles. The study combines recent discoveries about black hole superradiance and gravitational atoms. Two possible outcomes were identified: either the particle cloud survives and leaves a detectable ionization signature, or it is destroyed and the black hole binary's orbit acquires specific measurable characteristics. This research provides a new strategy for searching for ultralight bosons, which could solve puzzles in astrophysics, cosmology, and particle physics.
