AI can detect serious neurologic changes in babies in the NICU using video data alone

Mount Sinai researchers developed an AI tool using video footage to track infant movements in NICUs. The deep learning algorithm monitors neurological metrics, potentially enabling continuous health monitoring. Trained on extensive video data from 115 infants, the system accurately predicts sedation and cerebral dysfunction. This technology could improve outcomes for the hundreds of thousands of newborns admitted to NICUs annually in the US, complementing existing medical assessments.
