A photographer captures two very rare phenomena in the sky at the same time

Photographer Valter Binotto captured an unprecedented image on November 26, 2025, showing two extremely rare lightning phenomena occurring simultaneously above the Alps. The shot features an elve—a red electromagnetic ring up to 480 kilometers in diameter—and a red sprite, a jellyfish-shaped formation that appears between 80-145 kilometers above thunderstorms. Both phenomena last only milliseconds, making them nearly impossible to photograph, and scientists remain uncertain about how they form, potentially making this unique image valuable for future research.
