The xEngineer: A New Blueprint for Software Engineering in the AI Era

Writing code is becoming a commodity, and software engineers at companies like Wix are transforming into something they call "xEngineers" who orchestrate AI tools rather than manually craft every line of syntax. This shift allows smaller teams to own products from concept to production, with individual engineers capable of working across frontend, backend, and mobile systems using AI assistance to bridge knowledge gaps.

"The profession of a software developer is to solve problems. The way that we were taught how to solve a problem is by writing code. We understand now that the skill of writing code is a skill that is maybe less needed as AI becomes better," explains Aviran Mordo from Wix's engineering leadership.

Instead of focusing on narrow technical specialties, these engineers operate more like architects or directors, designing systems that manage the uncertainty of AI models while leveraging tools like Claude Code and Cursor throughout the development lifecycle.

The transformation goes beyond just generating code. AI now helps engineers navigate massive legacy systems, debug complex architectures, and complete tasks that previously required coordination between multiple specialized teams, fundamentally redefining what it means to be a software developer in an age where syntax matters less than systems thinking.
