WebMCP: A new contract between AI agents and websites

Google has introduced WebMCP, an experimental protocol that allows websites to create structured contracts for AI agents to interact with them directly through the browser, eliminating inefficient DOM scraping and screenshot analysis. The system offers two approaches: an Imperative API where developers register tools via JavaScript, and a Declarative API that enhances existing HTML forms with special attributes. Currently available only in Chrome 146+ with experimental flags enabled, WebMCP could make AI-website interactions faster, cheaper, and more reliable by providing clear tool schemas and execution methods.
