This Light-Powered AI Chip Is 100x Faster Than a Top Nvidia GPU

Chinese researchers have developed LightGen, an all-optical AI chip that uses light instead of electricity to generate images and videos. The chip integrates over two million artificial neurons into a quarter-square-inch device and processes images at 512-by-512 pixel resolution through optical latent space technology using metasurfaces and fiber arrays. Testing showed the chip operates more than 100 times faster and more energy-efficiently than Nvidia's A100 GPU on generative AI tasks, offering a solution to AI's growing energy consumption problem.
