New high-energy drop-in fuel clears first rotating detonation rocket engine test

A rocket fuel that could slot right into existing engines without a single hardware change is now being put to the test. CycloKinetics and Venus Aerospace are evaluating a new propellant called CycloRP inside a rotating detonation rocket engine, a cutting-edge design that uses controlled detonation waves to squeeze more energy out of combustion. The first phase, completed in July 2026, confirmed that CycloRP can successfully detonate inside the engine, a critical hurdle given the extreme pressures involved. Next comes the harder question: can it keep engines cool? Engineers plan to circulate the fuel through engine components before ignition, testing whether it manages heat as effectively as conventional propellants. Mukund Karanjikar, CEO of CycloKinetics, says the fuel was "designed as a direct replacement for conventional rocket propellants," with domestic production as an added advantage. Backed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the program expects to deliver a full technical assessment in early 2027.
